How to choose

Match the card to the job

Clearing existing debt? 0% balance transfer. Big purchase you'll repay over a year? 0% purchase. Spending you'd do anyway? Cashback or rewards. Travelling? No FX fee card.

Watch the fees

Most 0% balance transfers charge 2–3% upfront. On £5,000 that's £100–£150 — still a steal vs 24%+ interest, but factor it in.

Always pay the minimum

Missing a payment on a 0% card normally cancels the 0% rate and you revert to ~25% APR. Set up a Direct Debit for the minimum the day you open it.

Don't apply scattergun

Each hard search dents your file for 6 months. Use soft-search eligibility tools to find a card you'll actually be accepted for first.

FAQs

Will checking eligibility hurt my credit score?
No — eligibility checkers use a soft search that's invisible to other lenders. Only a full application creates a hard search.
What credit score do I need?
0% balance transfers and rewards cards usually want 'good' or 'excellent'. If yours is fair or poor, credit-builder cards with low limits and high APR are the realistic option.
Can I transfer balances between cards from the same provider?
Usually no — most issuers block intra-group transfers. If you have a Barclaycard, look for offers outside the Barclays group.
