How Much Do I Need to Retire in the UK?
A 'comfortable' UK retirement needs roughly £43k/year for a single person — that's a pot of around £750k plus State Pension.
The Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association publishes annual Retirement Living Standards. For 2025: Minimum £14,400/yr, Moderate £31,300/yr, Comfortable £43,100/yr (single, outside London).
The 4% rule
A common benchmark: you can safely withdraw 4% of your pot per year for 30 years. So £40,000/yr × 25 = a £1,000,000 pot. Subtract the State Pension (~£11,500/yr) and you need around £700–750k of private pension.
What if I'm behind?
Increase contributions, work an extra 2–3 years, or downsize the home. Each year of extra work typically adds 6–8% to your final sustainable income.
Estimate how big your pension pot will be at retirement and how much sustainable monthly income it could produce.
